Gien is made in France from faience, porous glazed pastes composed of various earthenware clays. One of the clays is kaolin, which adds strength, durability and whiteness of color, making it superior to typical earthenware products. Many stages of the production process are manual. Up to twenty hands touch each piece from molding, firing and decorating to the finished product. Many pieces are hand decorated, such as the finials of teapots, mugs and plate edges. Gien patterns are known for their richness of color and variety of shapes.
